Hurricane on the Bayou

How are wetlands formed?  What important roles do they play environmentally and as a storm surge protector? Do you think that the effects of Hurricane Katrina would have been greater or less if the wetlands were still in place?  What can be done to restore the wetlands at the mouth of the Mississippi River?  View the link to the Hurricane on the Bayou website and give us your thoughts

The video made me think of how strong and powerful natural events (such as hurricanes) can be. The video is important to me because I've seen the destruction of a tornado, and now I can see the effects of hurricanes. I could see the erosiokn and deposition changing the people and the environment.

Wetlands protect by making the hurricane winds softer. If the wetlands weren't disapearing then hurricane Katrina would have hit a little bit softer.

Peters,Jennifer said...

Wetlands are formed by land being covered by water in which the water stays and the land becomes a wetland or you could call it a marsh. Wetlands play an important role environmentally because they play as a habitat to crocodiles and alligators, birds and more. Wetlands are an okay storm portector because they do absorb most of the blows,but they don't totally stop some of the blows.I think the hurricane would have hit the places less because wetlands absorb water, so the water would saty in the grassy part of the wetland. The residents could rstore the wetlands by putting more sand down and creating more of a barrier for the wetlands.

The wetlands are formed by rain. They provide protection and can stop hurricanes from flooding the land so much.If the wetlands were still all their hurricane Katrina ed new orleans as much and it wouldnt have been as bad. A way to preserve and restore the wetlands is by redirecting the Mississippi River’s silt and re-planting vital foliage.

This video made me think of whats happening to other people and how they feel when certain disasters strike. This video helps me to unsterstand other people's situatons and more about how erosion and depostion can effect people and there enviorment.

ReddingtonDavid said...

@ andrew
it didnt just kill the plants, it killed the marshes

Moehring,DeeAnna said...

Wetlands may be formed by floods over land staying over it forming a marsh or wetland. Wetlands enviormently play a role because its habitat for animals and plants and for a surge storm protectors it will slow hurricanes down. the effects of hurricane katrina would have been less i tink because the wetlands are supposed to slow down hurricanes because every 3 miles of wetlands i ft goes of the hurricane. to restore the wetlands we should maybe flatenn and get rid of the levees.

Peters,Jennifer said...

@ luke
I totally agree. The wetlands do act like a sponge and absorb all the water, that's why the wetlands need to be in th right place! The people would be better protected at least a little bit if it was in the right place!

Wetlands formed by lots of rain and floods. It is like a marsh it's pretty self explanatory it's wet land.Wetlands are important in our environment because it is home to many plants and and animals who are a big part of our environment. Wetlands play an important role as a storm surge protector because they slow down hurricane damage. I think the effects of Hurricane Katrina would be less if the wetlands were still in place. We can add sand at the mouth of the Mississippi River,so the wetlands could build. I think the Hurricane on the Bayou video was really interesting, but I felt bad for all the Hurricane Katrina victims.

@Courtney Yeah I know what you mean. Think about if you were there how scary it would be because not only would you have to worry about yourself, but also all of your friends and family. Nature has such a strong effect on people that sometimes we don't realize.

schatzman.arin said...

I think wetlands are formed when forest is flooded and the water level stays at that height.One environmental job that wetlands provide is being the habitat of many different species.The job it provides as a storm surge protector is that every 3 miles of wetlands reduce the size of a hurricane by one foot.I believe that if all the wetlands were still in place it would have lessened the effects of Hurricane Katrina by a noticable amount.The wetlands can be restored by people planting more plants that protect or regrow the wetlands itself.I thought the video was pretty cool except the part where they said that Merryl Streep was the narrorater and then she said about 5 or 6 lines all at the beginning.

Savard, Samantha said...

A wetland is exactly like a marsh in some ways it is formed when a body of water floods.wetlands environmentally play a role because of the vital speed bumps.If the wetlands were still here then I think it would become less harmful because the wetlands would suck up the water like what luke said as a sponghe

Henson,Megan said...

Wetlands are formed by depostition. Wetlands play an important role environmentally because they play as a habitat to crocodiles and alligators, birds and more. Less, because the wetlands act as a sponge and soak up most of the blow. To restore the wet lands, they can flaten the levees.

Mauricio,Courtney said...

Wetlands are formed by erosion and partly by deposition. The wetlands protect the animals and the people's homes. I the effects of Katrina would be worse if they werent in place because wetlands protect the places. You can bring sand and other pieces of land to replenish the soil and add more plants from that area.

Mauricio,Courtney said...

i agree with you i think that would really help the wetlands.

wetlands are formed by water going into a certain area one land and there is to much so it just kepps filling up and forms a wetland. It protects from storms because it takes the water and absorbs it. zi think the hurricane katrina would be the sasme because wetlands are small and hurricane katrina was very big i thibnk it would have took some water away from it but not much. they could build a wetland there selves and let the rest just happen.

the wetlands provide protection because every 3 miles of wetlands is one less foot of water. if the wetlands were still there, hurricane katrina would be less harmful. a way to rebuild the wetlands is getting rid of the levis. :)

When water stays on top of the soil. They would protect because every three miles is one less foot of water in the hurricane. There would be less effect because there would be les water. We can get rid of the levies. I thought it was very interesting and I wish I could know more.

@ReddingtonDavid

I agree with you about the levies.

the wetlands did provide protection because evry 6 miles is 2 feet of less water which is good when hurricans come because i t cause lees flloding with less water.if there was still wetland hurrican katrina would be less harmful.

@luke
i agree with you luke and how the wet land are like a sponge and absoreb water. it could be less harmful when a hurrican came.

i think wet lands are made when a large amount of water is forced over a patch of land for a long while and when the water is fully absorbed in the soil that area becomes wet and water bering there for making it a wet land. hurricanes, floods, and monsoons can also cause wetlands to form due to there large amount of water.

wetlands are formed by deposit. yes the damage of katrina would be less.

@ deeanna
i dont think that the wetlands are supposed to slowdown anything becasue they werent man-made so no one really meant for them to do anything.

thinking about it, its sad how ifthey had had more wetlands. the damage could have been much less ifthey had the same amout of wetlands like they did say fifty years ago.

@Sarah Savard

Didn't it say though that the wetlads were frmed by the depositing of soil from the river.

Wetlands are formed by water constantly moveing and flooding the land. They play as homes for many different animals, also they can make a tornado or hurricane decreese in size. The effects of hurricane Katrina would have been less damageing if the wetlands were still in place. What can be done to restore the wetlands at the mouth of the Mississippi River is, humans can stop trying to build near them and remove the plant life.

monni szary the wetlands proviede protection because every 3 miles of wetland is less foot of water.

Why, whoever posted these questions must not have watched the video. Of course the damage of Hurricane Katrina would be less! According to the video, the wetlands act as a sponge and absorb most of the blows. To restore dese "wetlands" we must flatten the levees and dam the cANALS.
