On Friday an Earthquake occured in New Zealand.  Read the following article and reply to the questions I have listed.

New Zealand Earthquake

1.  Where in New Zealand did this earthquake occur?
2.  What was the magnitude of this earthquake?
3.  What prior quake did they compare this one to?  Why was the damage less in the New Zealand quake?
4.  What happens to the tectonic plates in New Zealand?
5.  When was the last major quake in New Zealand?
6.  How many earthquakes occur each year in New Zealand?

Any other thoughts, comments or concerns .....

the earth quake hit on new zealands south island early saturday morning. its magnetude was from 5.3 to 3.9. this quake compared to South Island's Fiordland and this quake did not cause as much damage because this quake had less magnitude. the plates rubbed togather under new zealand causeing it to shake.more than 14,000 hit a year but usually only 150 are felt by residents. the last major quake was july 16 2009.

I think it would stink to have an earthquake just like it would be to have hurricane Katrina. I think both natural disasters would stink.

3 the earthquake was compared to Haiti. The damage was less in New Zealand's quake cause the structures are better built in new zeland than it haiti.
4 Two tectonic plates collide, which are located under new zeland
5 The last major earth quake in New Zealand was the one on July 16, 2009.
6 The country has more than 14,000 earthquakes each year! but many are not strong enough for people to feel.

1.) The earthquake accoured 19 miles west of the city of christ church
2.)the earthquakes magnetude was 7.0
3.) they compared the earthquake to haitis. Haiti's was worse because new zelands buildings have more structure so they didnt do as much damage as haitis buildings did.
4.)the plates hit and rubbed together cause new zeland to have an earthquake.
5.)the magnetude waas 7.8 on the last earthquake and was July 16th 2009.
6.)14,000 earthquakes but residents only felt 150 and 10 only caused real damage.

last week, an earthquake hit New Zealand and its Southern Islands, where two very, very active tectonic plates lay, occasionally sliding against each other. 14000 times a year actually. Though there are many every week, only 150 are felt by the people, and only 10 do serious damage. The last earthquake of extremely dangerous magnitude was July 16, 2009, a 7.8
this earthquake that occurred last week happened at 4:35...A.M.! It was also a 7.1. Imagine getting shook out of bed at 4:35. The media and scientists compared this earth quake to Haitis, though New Zealands buildings are more durable.
